The controversial Northern Ireland Protocol was created to prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland.
It subsequently tied Northern Ireland to the EU customs union and single market, resulting in checks on goods moving around the UK.
Jack Ross, Union Research Fellow at the independent Bow Group think-tank, has condemned the current protocol and said the arrangement threatens the Union and UK sovereignty.

He told Express.co.uk “The Bow Group was one of the few Brexit supporting organisations not to get caught up in the heady praise for the Brexit deal.

Liz Truss addressed issues surrounding the Northern Ireland Protocol and the legal threats made by the European Union over the UK s plans to unilaterally extend the NI grace period. She explained that the move was a temporary measure and not a breach of the Protocol since it was common to see decisions like these made during a negotiation period. It comes as Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove failed to secure a two-year extension of the grace period - which reduces the number of checks at the Northern Ireland border.
