London | Britain’s first byelection since Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s thumping 2019 ballot-box triumph has been electrified by polls suggesting he could seize the Labour stronghold of Hartlepool on Thursday (Friday AEST).
The seat has now assumed totemic significance in the eyes of Westminster watchers: if Mr Johnson wins, it would reconfirm his peerless ability to capture blue-collar votes and seats previously owned for generations by the Labour Party.
And it would also cast fresh doubt on the ability of Opposition Leader Keir Starmer, anointed a year ago after Jeremy Corbyn’s disastrous tenure, to rebuild the so-called “red wall” of formerly Labour-held seats in disadvantaged parts of northern England.
Jill Mortimer, Conservative Mrs Mortimer is a farmer in North Yorkshire, she studied law at Teesside University as a mature student and has three children. She is currently a district councillor for Hambleton District Council, in North Yorkshire, she lives near Thirsk. If elected she will become the first Conservative MP for Hartlepool since the seat was created in 1974. While, campaigning Mrs Mortimer said she wants ‘Hartlepool to build back better’ and if elected she wants to make sure ‘Hartlepool is at the centre of the post-pandemic recovery by creating more jobs and attracting extra-investment to the town’. Her campaign focused ‘on delivering on the people’s priorities for the town’.
