NIU Lifelong Learning Institute: The Art of Public Speaking: Lessons from Famous Speeches in History with Convener Jitka Hurych

Event Description In this course, participants will get a chance to hear great speeches, as well as learn practical tips for any public speaking situation: overcoming fear and other obstacles, using voice and body language, practicing, sharing personal experience and using stories, when possible. Convener: Jitka Hurych has been a member of LLI since her retirement from the NIU Library. She has already presented several courses for LLI, most recently on language and society. The Northern Illinois University Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI), established in 2000, is a member-directed group of individuals primarily age 50 plus who enjoy learning in informal, flexible, non-competitive groups and like connecting with peers who share their interests. No grades, no tests – just Learning for the Fun of It.

NIU Lifelong Learning Institute: America s Empire with Convener Dan Dillman

Event Description The self-image of the United States as a republic usually overlooks the fact that our nation has been and is an empire. This course briefly examines the following to provide a clearer perspective: (a) the Logo Map, (b) the synthetic revolution, (c) the red octagon, (d) language as a virus, and (e) the pointillist empire. A world map would be helpful to have handy for class. Convener: Dan Dillman is a Distinguished Teaching Professor in Geography Emeritus at NIU. He has presented a variety of LLI courses, including US-Mexico Borderlands, Palaces and Vineyards of Europe, and Shapes of U.S. States.

NIU Lifelong Learning Institute: Potpourri

Event Description We’ll continue the coffee-and-chat sessions that LLI members enjoyed this winter with an added twist. Some weeks will be purely social, other weeks may include brainstorming about future classes or meeting the people who keep LLI running. We ll keep you posted. This course will meet on Wednesday mornings of weeks 1, 3, 5 and 7, alternating sessions with the book discussion course. Conveners: Various LLI Steering Committee members will convene these sessions, depending on the topic.
