Efforts to reclaim the lakefront have come and gone for decades, but current plans may be a sign that communities are ready to recapture their waterfronts.
The $10.7 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant would help Cleveland remake the street, adding a multi-purpose trail, a 6-foot-wide sidewalk, pedestrian crossings, benches, new trees and parking for bicycles and scooters.
Virgin Hyperloop announced last week that it will lay off more than 100 workers and shift its focus from passenger to freight service, according to The Financial Times. The transportation company has been working to develop technology that would send large pods through vacuum-seal tubes at speeds exceeding 500 mph.

NORTH ROYALTON, Ohio City officials have applied for a $50,000 grant that would help pay for a town-center improvement study.
The money would come from the Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative, which helps local communities improve transportation and make better use of land. The grant program is administered by the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency.
Tom Jordan, the city’s director of community development, said the town center study will be separate from the municipal master plan review scheduled for this year.
“The master plan will deal with the zoning aspects of the city and town center district,” Jordan told cleveland.com. “The town center study will deal with the physical aspect, in term of roads and infrastructure, and how to make them pedestrian-friendly and more attractive to residents and visitors.”
