A 19th century pub will be more sustainable after a six-figure loan allowed its owners to build holiday cottages around it. Kate and Adam Shanley bought the Northbrook Arms – the only pub in the village of East Stratton, near Winchester – in 2019. The couple have a background in holiday accommodation, with two cottages on the other side of Winchester, and had plans for holiday accommodation at the Northbrook Arms. But the plans were delayed by the pandemic and the process of getting planning permission. With the help of a first-stage £380,000 loan from Lloyds Bank, work is under way to create five surrounding holiday cottages of various sizes, sleeping 34 people in total.
