A MEMORIAL bench marking the life of 15 year old Leah Heyes is to be unveiled in her home town. The memorial presentation for Leah will take place in the Applegarth Park in Northallerton on Saturday, July 3. It has been organised by her mum Kerry Roberts, who will be joined by family, friends, and North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Philip Allot to commemorate Leah’s death. Kerry says she wants the strong message to be conveyed to Leah’s generation that taking drugs can result in tragedy and that what happened to Leah is a reality. The teenager died in May 2019 after taking two bombs of ecstasy, also known as MDMA, which had been supplied by two local teenagers. She collapsed in the Applegarth park, and desperate attempts were made to save her by paramedics, but she died later in hospital.

Jurassic Northallerton, a huge family event with giant dinosaurs occupying the heart of the town, is booked for Sunday, July 18 and is expected to attract thousands of visitors, as long as it can go ahead. Northallerton Business Improvement District is working with 220 local shops and traders to promote the town, but has already had to cancel another big attraction, a classic car event due to be held on April 18, because there was concern the pandemic restrictions could still be causing problems.
