New guide service is all about that bass

David Colburn COOK- Soon-to-be North Woods School senior Jake Panichi, of Cook, isn’t known for taking any of his sporting exploits lightly. When it comes to baseball, a favorite sport, Panichi bears down with ferocity from the pitching mound, sprints and leaps with abandon in the outfield to turn sure hits into spectacular outs, and is nothing short of full throttle when running the bases. And when it comes to fishing, Panichi has waded in with the same focused intensity. His parents started taking him fishing when he was old enough to walk, Panichi said, and his grandfather, well-known guide Joe Panichi, has also been an inspiration and a mentor. But, it seems, there’s a catch, and it’s not one to toss in a live well.

Making the call for 40 years

David Colburn COOK- It’s a long-held and widely accepted rule that umpires and officials are supposed to be impartial, no matter the sport, no matter the ages of the athletes. But it’s difficult to imagine anyone faulting Bill Peterson, of Cook, for an inadvertent slip last week. After all, after four decades of officiating football, basketball, baseball and softball, he’s earned a little grace. Over the years, Peterson has refereed games involving all his grandchildren, but umpiring a junior varsity softball game at North Woods School last Thursday, May 6, gave Peterson an opportunity to take that experience to a new level. Great-granddaughters Hailie and Emma Peterson, 14 and 13, respectively, were in the lineup for Cherry, the Grizzlies’ opponent, and Peterson was behind the plate.

Bois Forte ready to vaccinate adolescents in COVID-19 fight

While the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa medical providers this week announced only six active COVID-19 cases on the reservation, they also reported an uptick in the number of youth who tested positive for the coronavirus. Tribal Chairwoman Cathy Chavers said in a recent government update that the regional health officials already have the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses and are now readying themselves for a federal greenlighting for the use of Pfizer vaccine for people ages 12 to 15. She noted that tribal clinic officials have been seeking out a freezer in order to store the vaccines in Nett Lake and Vermilion, in addition to coordinating with local agencies to soon administer vaccines at the North Woods School in Cook, on the reservation.
