Plans to introduce 30mph speed limit on road in Ongar

A notice from Essex County Council in this week’s Guardian outlines the plan to make the change on High Ongar Road, which is currently designated national speed limit. Representations on the proposal are currently being sought, but if the plan is approved the 30mph limit will be introduced on the length of High Ongar Road, in the parishes of High Ongar/Ongar. The new limit would be introduced from its western junction with the Chelmsford Road (A414), northwards, eastwards and southwards for the entire length to its eastern junction with the Chelmsford Road, including all side roads. Meanwhile, an order came into force on March 4 for the phased temporary closure of various sections of roads in Epping Forest.

Stan Newens obituary

Last modified on Fri 2 Apr 2021 11.02 EDT The former Labour MP Stan Newens, who has died aged 91, would never accept office under the governments of Harold Wilson or Jim Callaghan, as ministerial duties seemed to offer too many opportunities for compromise. Sitting on the backbenches as a dedicated MP for Epping from 1964 to 1970 and then for Harlow for nine years from 1974, he was rarely happy with those Labour governments, once comparing Wilson’s second stint in Downing Street as like “sitting through a bad film twice”. Ironically, when he made his final exit from the House of Commons in 1983 he was swept away in Margaret Thatcher’s landslide victory after defending a Labour manifesto with which he was probably more comfortable than any other on which he stood.
