Wilmington pens designs for $3M MLK Center addition, project rises in cost

$1.8 million was included to renovate the MLK community center’s entrance and lobby, upgrade its bleachers and floors, and add a second gym. Plans for the MLK Center include a new 50-by-84-foot gym/multi-purpose room. It would bring the total occupancy of both gyms up to 499 people. The court could be used for basketball, wrestling, volleyball and pickleball. Motorized curtains and goals will make it easy to change the sport.  There is also new storage for equipment and office space in the plans. City of Wilmington engineering project manager Anne Ballweg presented two building options. One was a masonry and stucco design that would cost an estimated $3.6 million.

(WECT) - The North Carolina Azalea Festival is hoping to do things a little differently this year. Organizers say the traditional springtime event will be celebrated throughout most of 2021. “The Azalea Festival has an over $50 million economic impact annually,” said Alison English, the festival’s executive director. “We know those large events are the biggest drivers of those, so it’s our hope that by pushing those later in the year, we’ll still be able to have those events and the community will benefit from that. That economic stimulus gets put back into our restaurants, our businesses and our hotels that we all need so much, especially during this time.”
