PETALING JAYA: Over the New Year’s Eve weekend, nearly a thousand people gathered to protest the construction of two dormitories intended to house migrant workers in Teluk Kumbar, Penang.
PETALING JAYA: An activist has welcomed the suggestion for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) into the migrant workers management system and forced labour problem, saying it would “name and shame” those responsible for migrant worker abuses.
Migrant workers constitute a significant and heavily exploited section of the Malaysian working class who are often enticed to the country with promises of jobs that never materialise.
Traditionally labour-intensive industries urged the government to give them more time to automate their processes and attract more locals to what would hopefully be higher-paying jobs.
