Japan, 7 other economies agree to cut saury catch quotas by 40% Japan, China and six other economies of the North Pacific Fisheries Commission agreed Thursday to cut their combined saury catch quota by 40 percent to 333,750 tons per year in order to address fishery resource depletion. The new catch limit, which was decided during a three-day online meeting through Thursday, will be in place until the end of 2022. Tokyo had proposed a reduction of annual catch quotas as a way to prevent overfishing in the high seas by China and Taiwan. Photo: Kyodo Japan s annual catch of prized Pacific saury collapsed by nearly 30 per cent last year to a record low haul, with fishing authorities blaming the decline on a combination of ocean conditions and the likes of China and Taiwan taking a larger haul. Tokyo is so concerned that it plans to propose new limits on catches when the eight member states of the North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)- which also include Russia, South Korea and the United States - meet in February.
