The huge settlement ends a case called Miller v. City of New York which was filed in 2021 in federal court in Manhattan and claimed people were held on Rikers jails in isolation between 2018 and 2022 in violation of their due process rights. Each plaintiff in the class action suit will receive roughly $9,000, depending on how many days they were held in solitary confinement.
Correction sources said the fire suppression system in the North Infirmary Command was installed in 2018, and features recessed sprinkler heads which are supposed to pop out and spray water when triggered by significant heat or smoke. But on Thursday, the sources said, the sprinklers failed to come on, and warning strobes didn’t function.
