The grand princess is returning from hawaii after a former passenger a man from Placer County got sick and became the first person in california to die from the coronavirus. The governor has declared a state of emergency. The cruise ship is at sea and will stay there while the state follows testing protocol. [ applause ] in introducing tonight speaker, dr. Joanne freeman, i would like to mention at the outset that one of her most commendable qualifications is that she received her ph. D. From the university. Thats right, uva. [laughter] in any case, not long after receiving that degree, she was recognized already as one of the nations top young historians. She subsequently has achieved widespread recognition as a scholar of the revolutionary and Early National periods of American History. She is the author of numerous articles on those subjects which will appear in print in proper academic journals including the william and mary quarterly, the journal of policy history and the yale law journal among others.
