Free Ontario Park passes now available at local libraries

March 16, 2021 By Chris Drost Libraries across the province, including those close to home, the North Hastings Public Library, Hastings Highlands Public Library, Wollaston Public Library and the Carlow/Mayo Public Library, have been provided with free provincial park day-use passes and discount coupons for future visits, and they are eager for you to take advantage of the offer. Just like when you borrow a book from the library, you borrow one of the participating library’s Seasonal Day-Use Permit passes that allow free access for one vehicle and its passengers to 100 different provincial parks across Ontario. To borrow a pass you simply have to have a library card. The libraries also have a limited number of next day discount passes that they typically provide to those borrowing a pass.

North Hastings Public Library launches Mystery Bags initiative

March 17, 2021 Local Journalism Initiative Reporter North Hastings Public Library unveiled a new initiative on their Facebook page on March 9 called “Mystery Bags.” The idea, according to the library’s events coordinator Natalie Phillips, is to follow the NHPL’s March theme “Whodunnit” by providing a mystery bag full of books, with patrons not knowing what books are in them until they get home. It also spurs people into trying out new book genres and book authors. The bags are available by donation and all proceeds go toward funding the library’s programs. Natalie Phillips is the new events coordinator at NHPL, and says she absolutely loves working at the library.

North Hastings Public Library introduces fresh new resources

January 19, 2021 By Chris Drost With the ongoing pandemic restricting the activities that adults and children typically enjoy, the North Hastings Public Library has made a point in ramping up the resources it has available to keep all ages occupied, engaged and excited about learning something new. “Our new events person hasn’t even started yet but already, we have expanded the variety of books and other resources at NHPL so there is something for everyone,” says CEO Kimberly McMunn. One of the key collection improvements is curriculum support. NHPL received $12,500 in funding from Prince Edward County Communities Foundation under the Emergency Community Support Fund for curriculum support books and two early literacy computers in a project called, “Knowledge at the Library is Free – Bring Your Own Container,” says McMunn.
