Next, a look at our recent visit to lafayette and west lafayette, indiana. You are watching American History tv all weekend, every weekend. The development of canals and railroads was important to the early growth of lafayette. We visited the big four depot to learn more about transportations role. The first canal finally got here from fort wayne about 1843, connecting the wabash river, down to the ohio river up to toledo. It was possible to go by canal boat that entire distance. It made possible for products from here to go to the northeast, go up to new york city and anywhere on the great lakes. That was significant because this was a transfer point. The farmers could bring their grain. There was animals. Animals could be processed here at the various packing plants here. They could transfer those products, the slaughtered animals and the grain, to th
The unions made a small step toward management saying they would agree to sit down and talk over the differences but, a huge but, only if the board agrees to ratify the contract today in the vote. The board has said it does not plan to do that or has indicated it will not be ratifying the contract. The board is calling the family leave section a mistake saying it is too expensive. Riders say they are tired of all of this and some are managing to ignore all of the details. I dont really get into it because you never know why they are going backandforth. I dont depend on bart. I have a car. I have options. The unions or management will not say what will happen if the contract is not ratified. There is fear there could be a strike. Commuters in pittsburg say it is a long way to go to San Francisco from here in the cars and they are asking both sides to think of them, the commuters, who need the trains.
