Just before 10:00 am on Saturday morning, Galesburg Police responded to the 100 block of North Chambers Street for a report of a stolen vehicle. Police met with a man who said his 79-year-old grandmother's sedan was stolen from her driveway. The sedan is a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, and the victim did not give anyone permission to take it. The woman told police she lost her car keys a week prior and had not been able to find them. Around 3:30 pm Saturday afternoon, the Galesburg Police Department was contacted by the Goddard Police Department of Goddard, Kansas. The stolen vehicle was located and a female suspect inside the car, a 51-year-old Galesburg woman, was arrested. The sedan had sustained some front-end damage and was covered in scratches. The woman told Goddard police that she purchased the vehicle and was driving to Colorado. The woman's last known address was near where the vehicle was stolen on North Chambers. Galesburg Police, shortly after 2:00 am on Sunday, were dispatched to the 300 block of North Chambers Street for a report of an accident with injuries. Officers arrived on the scene and discovered a Honda sedan just south of the train tracks sitting in the roadway. The engine was running, music was playing, and the male driver was passed out behind the wheel sleeping. Officers also observed an open alcoholic beverage in the cup holder. Police were able to wake the 34-year-old driver and asked him to hand them the keys, to which the driver attempted to hand officers a hamburger, according to police reports. After a field sobriety test indicated signs of impairment, and the driver admitted to being "a little drunk" he was placed under arrest. The man refused to submit a breath sample and was then transported to OSF to be medically cleared - per jail policy. The man was charged with DUI A2, Obstructing Traffic, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.
Galesburg Police late Sunday afternoon (March 6th) responded to the area of East Losey Street and North Chambers Street for a report of a two-vehicle accident. A vehicle had struck another vehicle from behind and no one was hurt. Police made contact with the 17-year old driver that struck the other vehicle who had a valid Knox County Warrant. The male was stumbling around, slurring his words, and his eyes appeared glassy and watery according to police reports. The teen denied drinking alcohol or smoking cannabis despite a strong cannabis odor emitting from him and the vehicle. After a field sobriety test indicated signs of impairment, the teen was placed under arrest. A small amount of cannabis and an open container of alcohol was found inside the vehicle. Ultimately, the teen was charged with DUI Drugs, Aggravated DUI No Insurance, the warrant, Following Too Closely, Failure to Reduce Speed, No Insurance, Unlawful Possession of Cannabis, and Illegal Transportation of Liquor.
