The unusual piebald trait in deer

“So she does. No one seems to mind that she looks so different.”
The North Castine deer herd roams the undeveloped heart of the Square, an area encircled by the Castine Road and the Shore Road. Leaving the security of the forest for the green pastures of residential lawns on both sides of those roads, various family units can be seen crossing yards and foraging the abundant vegetation. Every few years, an unusual trait becomes expressed in a new fawn. White patches of various sizes replace the normal brown or gray-brown. These creatures have received the moniker “piebald deer.”
