It was the fourth time Schlesinger had entered the contest. But what made this piece stand out among the rest was its ability to hold the reader’s attention from start to finish.
“I moved through this atmospheric tale with keen interest, breath held, heart hopeful,” said final judge Therese Anne Fowler. “The story is evocative, suspenseful, effective and affecting––an impressive accomplishment of writing craft and storytelling. My congratulations to the author.”
Post-Traumatic MoonPie tells the story of a teenage boy who is struggling to come to terms with his father’s death. Schlesinger said he likes to emphasize real life trauma in his stories.
