Rather, it is monumental: it signals a major change in academia’s underlying belief system from the open-minded pursuit of truth to a narrow, dogmatic, political fundamentalism. This is a transition no less revolutionary than the philosophical shift that occurred in the 19thcentury, when the traditional Christian intellectual framework was pushed aside for the more “objective” measure of the scientific method. Unlike that earlier transition which advanced academic freedom even though it unmoored our colleges from valuable traditions, it is hard to see how the current one brings anything of value to our universities or to our society.

Department of Transportation board recently adopted a resolution to dedicate a section of U.S. 129 in Graham County in honor of six-time Grammy winner and Country Music Hall of Fame member Ronnie Milsap. Signs designating this section from Yellow Creek Road to the Cheoah River, will be placed and a ceremony will be held at an appropriate time to honor the 77-year-old Milsap, who grew up in Robbinsville and recorded 40 No. 1 hits including “Smoky Mountain Rain.”
