The Kanawha County textbook controversy began on April 11, 1974 when a series of new textbook recommendations were approved by the Kanawha County School board. That decision led to protests, shootings, explosions and pickets. Now, 50 years later, we look back at the reasons for the controversy and the national movement that some say the protests spawned. Leaders in the fight for the book ban were Alice Moore, Marvin Horan and Karl Priest. Against it were Jim Lewis. In the mix were the Heritage Foundation and the Ku Klux Klan.
