Ex-members bid to dissolve Umno thrown out | Daily Express Online - Sabah s Leading News Portal

Published on: Thursday, March 04, 2021 By: Bernama Text Size: PUTRAJAYA: Sixteen former Umno members failed in their appeal in the Federal Court to obtain leave to commence their challenge to dissolve the political party (Umno) for not holding party elections within the prescribed time. A five-member bench led by Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Azahar Mohamed held that the relief sought by the former Umno members in their judicial review application has become academic as the party had completed its party election at all levels. He said the status of former Umno members were undisputed as they were no longer members of the political party by virtue of clause 20.7 of the Umn Constitution.

16 ex-UMNO members challenging RoS decision, not party s, Federal Court told

25 Jan 2021 / 19:02 H. Pix for illustration purposes. PUTRAJAYA: Sixteen former UMNO members are challenging the decision of the Registrar of Society (RoS) to allow a time extension for party elections to be held, and not the decision of the political party itself, the Federal Court five-member bench heard. Their counsel Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla submitted that the sixteen were not directly challenging UMNO’s internal decision. He said they challenging the RoS’ decision to allow extension of time was on the basis that it was tainted with illegality, irrationality and procedural impropriety. Mohamed Haniff Khatri argued that the reliance by the High Court judge and Court of Appeal judges on Section 18C of the Society Act 1966 was misplaced.
