Despite Pressure, Norfolk Will Keep Police Officers In Schools
Details Published: 22 January 2021
Norfolk’s public school campuses will continue to feature armed law enforcement officers, despite concerns that school resource officers are unnecessary and create fear among Black and brown students.
School districts across the country have severed ties with law enforcement since protests against police brutality raged across the country after a white police officer killed George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020.
Norfolk Public Schools faced calls to do the same. But in a 4-3 vote Wednesday, the city’s school board decided that schools will continue to have officers responsible for security and preventing crime on campuses.
