Article continues below advertisement ↴ Ten new fires were discovered in the northwest region by the early evening of July 24, 2021, according to Aviation, Forest Fire, and Emergency Services.  At the time of this update, there were 137 active fires in the northwest region. 44 fires were not under control, 8 fires were being held, 26 fires were under control and 59 fires were being monitored. The wildland fire hazard is high to extreme in the western portions of the region as well as an area of far north Nipigon district and low to moderate in the eastern portions of the region.  The newly discovered fires: Fort Frances 82 has been declared out at 0.1 hectares and was located near Burdiff Lake.

Mayor and local historian want memorial erected in honour of Spanish flu nurse SHARE ON: Timmins Mayor George Pirie wants to deliver on a 103-year-old promise. In 1918, the town council pledged $300.00 towards a memorial to Laura Keon. The nurse from the Ottawa Valley visited relatives in Timmins and decided to stay, to help care for victims of the Spanish flu epidemic. Local historian Diane Armstrong says that was a fatal decision. “She died after contracting the disease and she only lived for four days after she got ,” Armstrong states. She took up Keon’s cause at the suggestion of Nora Lake and Greg Reynolds, two other proponents of the Keon commemoration.  Mayor Pirie wants a plaque erected.  Armstrong says she leaves the format to the people. “We’ve got monuments to miners and prospectors and developers, but none of them died doing any of that work.”

Frost Natural Resource Centre stood. “The property is an absolute gem,” said OPSEU President Warren Thomas. “From training forest rangers in the 1920s to training our members and leaders in the 2020s, this property will serve OPSEU/SEFPO’s hardworking members so that they can continue to support our province, its people and its economy.” The sale was handled by CBRE Limited Real Estate Brokerage. “The site has 2,800 feet of shoreline frontage along St. Nora Lake which is popular for cottaging, boating and fishing,” a brochure on the brokerage’s website reads. “Formerly known as the Leslie M. Frost Natural Resource Centre, this site was initially opened as an outdoor education and training facility and has since been a destination for government staff, school groups, wildlife organizations, eco-touri
