worst of the storm, and we won t see the heavy rain or the heavy strong winds that they are seeing further down the coast, and we are dealing with what is likely to be the last high tide that the town is going to face while it is in the meat of the storm. and good news for new bern, and that is cold comfort for those trapped in their homes. the power is out across the city, and we have spent the morning going house the house to check on people who thought they could ride it out not realizing the level of water they would get here and combination of more than a foot of rain, and the storm surge of more than nine feet, and the surges they have had this summer, and the ground was wet, and nowhere for the water from the noose river here, and this is almost a secondary problem after the storm surge
roared roar ed ashore. we have seen some rescues, some dramatic rescues earlier in the day.we have seen some rescues, dramatic rescues earlier in the day. we already see some flooding as well. what s news there? reporter: the good news is the worst of the flooding has peaked here. this was all pushed up here overnight during a high tide that happened between 11:00 p.m. and midnight. we were worried the water might come back on the next high tide. that has not happened. the water has stayed about 100 yards off to my left here along the noose river which has been su such a nuisance for the people who live here. we spent a good portion of the morning out with the national guard as they were going door to door, house to house looking in windows and looking for anyone that might have been left behind and wanted to get out of here. we heard upwards of 500 calls,
don, we have seen an increase in new bern, north carolina. we re north of you where the noose river and the pimlico sound meet. a lot of intercoastal waterways leading to the atlantic ocean. the river has gone through union point park and it s now reaching across the road past the barriers into downtown new bern at this point and, again, you pointed out, we re just now seeing these outer bands. now, we haven t had too much on the part of this severe wind here but in new bern, in craven county, the problem is not going to be the wind. the problem is going to be the water. i am standing on a road right now. and for reference, i am almost six feet tall so it s now reaching above my knees. that there, there are people just a few minutes ago sitting in those little benches, letting the water rush up on them which is insanely dangerous but out there this is the noose river. we have watched it steadily rise as the wind has picked up a little bit. we ve seen aggressive white caps coming in b
also starting to float away. sand bags or not. and, again, florence hasn t actually shown up yet. so these are just those outer bends sort of producing rain, wind, flooding. we re on the noose river. we re not technically on the atlantic ocean. we have the pemlico sound. we have several channels. waterways and basically it s a place that s beautiful. this is why they vacation here, because it s surrounded by water. they flood a lot. people who live hearsay this is intense since the storm hasn t come yet. most of them tell me, i was bored. i just am sitting in the house all day waiting for this to happen. so emergency officials, kate, are asking people, please stay inside. there is a curfew here in craven county at 8:00 p.m. they re asking everyone, just go home. they have a few minutes to get where they re going. 8:00 they should be indoors. they mean it. diane, thank you very much.
location from where we had been all day. if we look back here, that s the park where i was doing lye shots throughout day. some of you may have seen it if you were watching cnn. the water slowly rose from around my ankles to where we had to leave. florence hasn t actually arrived yet here. part of this is because we re on the noose river but they have the atlantic ocean that feeds into this area here. they are used to flooding. they are used to hurricanes. a guy just walked by here and said this is a little extreme because we haven t had the storm yet. it s sort of a perfect situation for them. we watched these barriers throughout the day float on by. we are asking people as we see them because they are all coming out and taking pictures. people are riding their bicir e
