Where were you and what actually got you connected to the Civil Rights Movement . Deborah i read a book by richard cougar called social justice which was about brown versus the board of education and it was a gripping narrative. And i thought, that is what i wanted to do. Brian where were you . Deborah oh, i was a High School Student in chicago. Brian was there any person in your family deborah no. Brian nobody in your family was a lawyer . Deborah no, nobody thought it was a good idea. Brian where did you go . Deborah i went to yale law school. Brian what was it like at the time . Deborah there wasnt a lot of women. In my class, there was maybe 13 women. Most of the great lawyers were, of course, all men. Brian what did you notice about being a woman in law school at yale . Deborah how little notice i gave to it, really, and this is in retrospect. What is startling to me now is just how law and life were. There was discrimination everywhere, but it wasnt often talked about in law scho
Around Orange County and the inland empire, but in l. A. Itself, do you have a goal of what you think is reasonable to sign up over the next year or so . Im striving for 220,000. You are. If that takes us a series of years, so be it, but were putting rhettthe resources behind this. It pays us back many times over. It makes business sense first and foremost but it also makes ethical sense. You alluded to this before but cities may intervene on the other side . Were looking to have a lot of other cities who stepped up saying they want to be a part of it, too. We dont have, quote unquote, local government or the federal part of the government saying were against this because if just a few voices decided to challenge, we think we can get a coalition of cities much larger and that is an important counterbalance for any court. They may win this first round judging by what ive heard from the court its in but it will be appealed, of course. As its being appealed, its very important for america
Outside the box. I began my education in fort greeley while the School Facilities were a bit rustic the high quality of education i received inside those walls is what i remember so much. I thank each and every teacher who has taken on the high calling of educating our children. While we certainly have room for improvement in our schools, we should also celebrate our achievements. In nevada last month, at one of the toughest High School Wrestling tornments in the country, senior josh roteman won his weight class and earned the tournaments outstanding wrestling award. Josh is the first allamerican athlete from the high school and has been accepted to the u. S. Naval academy. This past spring, kristine fenderson of fair banks captured a silver medal at the United States decathlon super quiz. A competition that attract teams from around the world. These individual successes serve as reminder that the next generation has the talent and drive to succeed. Its up to us to provide the opportun
World is because the fcc was relatively retrained in 2010 compared to what it did now. Time will tell. The best example is europe where europeans have significantly less access to high speed broad band than we do. 82 of americans it only 48 of europeans. And when it comes to wireless in particular, the u. S. Has 50 of the worlds 4g lte subscribers. The reason is because till february 26th, we were relatively retrained and a bipartisan consensus that served so well since the clinton administration. Mr. Chairman, im out of time. I have additional questions id like to submit for the record. Senator sullivan, thank you. Well make sure those questions get submitted for the record. Since i cant see anybody else z coming in senator manchins turn. The chair recognizes the senator from West Virginia. Thank you, mr. Chairman. I appreciate that so much. This is such an interesting topic. I keep thinking back to those who are old enough or grew up basically before there was mobile phones. Cell pho
When i was in seoul and tokyo and when i was in different cities in china, they were all asking how can we get more diversity . They realize this is important for competition in the Global Economy today. We cant afford a conversation that is backwards, saying how do we keep these people in the fringes. Because they are going to be there. We need to embrace that and see our populations continue to grow in the u. S. Two final things and then bring in the audience. First you mentioned the importance. The goal here really is citizenship in the end. Not just legal status. And that will require legislation. Do you think this executive action in the long run is bringing us closer or further away from a legislative consensus on immigration . No question i think it is bringing us closer. And to use the metaphor from before like gay marriage. Civil unions, the sky didnt fall. It was a necessary first step, not the ultimate goal. As i joked with friend, whats going to happen when gay marriage goe
