Caught red handed: Police nab four suspects with several Sassa cards

DURBAN - Four people have appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of stolen property and contravention of National Credit Act after they were caught with several South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) cards.
This was after the police allegedly caught the four red handed with a 2-litre container with various cards.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said police officers received information about the group of suspects withdrawing money from an ATM.
“On the night of May 6, 2021, police officers from Brighton Beach SAPS received information about a group of suspects who were in possession of multiple Sassa cards, various bank cards and were busy withdrawing money from an ATM,” she said.
The Sharks launch a business centre

DURBAN - THE Sharks launched a state-of-the-art business centre that is aimed at assisting graduates, small start-up businesses and SMEs.
The launch took place on Tuesday at the newly built centre during a small, intimate event that was attended by the stakeholders, sponsors, eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, as well as Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi who has recently joined the Sharks.
The centre is based at the Jonsson Kings Park Stadium.
The Sharks chief executive Eduard Coetzee said the vision for the centre stemmed from the challenges of unemployment faced by the community, and therefore the aim of the business centre was to empower graduates and entrepreneurs by supplying them with necessary equipment.
Police hunt for pair over Newlands East teenâs kidnapping

DURBAN - POLICE are searching for two people who could have information regarding the kidnapping of Newlands East teenager Mmeli Ngcobo.
Mmeli, 16, was allegedly kidnapped outside his school in Newlands East early this year.
At the time, police said it was alleged that on February 17, Mmeli took a cellphone belonging to his classmate.
Police said his classmateâs parents came to the school and gave Mmeli until February 22 to return it.
On February 22, after school, Mmeli was allegedly approached by two men in a Mercedes-Benz and forced into the vehicle.
KZN Education Department tackles teacher shortages

DURBAN - THE Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has moved to address teacher shortages, and ordered that 700 teachers – who were identified as being surplus – to report to schools that need more staff.
The department said yesterday that it had found that 700 of 961 teachers, who had been identified as surplus in their current schools in terms of the Post Provision Norm (PPN), had not reported for duty at the schools which had shortages. The department said they had a meeting with teachers’ unions on Friday on the matter.
Endangered African wild dogs released in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

DURBAN - The Hluhluwe- iMfolozi Park (HiP) has released a newly formed pack of endangered African Wild Dogs into the reserve, with support from Wildlife ACT.
The African Wild Dog, which is also known as the African Painted Dog, is one of the most endangered animals in the world.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said the wild dogs were kept together, in a boma in iMfolozi, prior to their release into the park.
“The females had split off (dispersed) from another pack in HiP and the males had split off from their pack in Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, in the Northern Cape. The Endangered Wildlife Trust, which is one of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and Wildlife ACT’s partners within the KZN Wild Dog Management Group, assisted in bringing the males down to HiP, where they were put in one compartment of the boma and the females were put in the other compartment.
