couple years ago. and you re seeing this sort of steady drum beat of moms and gun owners and nongun owners, republicans and democrats, really kind of continuing to put the pressure on their elected officials. so i think it s just a matter of when, not if, for more sensible gun laws in this country. as you were speaking, we were looking at some of those images of those students exiting that school, and in those moments, i know when you get the first report and you re in the newsroom and you re trying to figure out how to cover it, you know, your heart goes into that moment of anguish as you wonder whether more students are going to be hurt. what are we going to do about this. and michael, when you look at the dialogue around this, sometimes it doesn t feel like we start with that basic empathy. that basic concern. and there s a new york times story today you and i were discussing on the front painful where you have a lot of sheriffs saying they don t even want to enforce the gun con
determine where they might steal the firearms. and another, major violation of privacy could cause safety issue for nongun owners. so true. meanwhile, i understand there was a development in another story we have been following. i m telling you, you know what this is. they are acting out the whole conflict of gay marriage. the turtle being the desire for gay marriage and the snauzer saying i am not ready for it. and the turtle is in his shell protected by the tolerance of liberal society and the snauzer is like, give me some time. i need to work through issues. you never get the subtle tees. you know how they have body experts on owe riley who make no sense at all? they come on and they go, oh
freedom is american. that is a bad, bad, you know i know from twitter and stuff to the stuff we ve been running, it s that word that really inflames the gun rights lobbyists. but then you talk to gun owners and nongun owners, what they agree on is responsibility. and gun safety. most of the nra members actually do believe strongly in gun safety. absolutely. now you can create something that s culturally consistent with people instead of fighting. you can t change culture that way. what is interesting is some of the history in terms the of other big social issues that americans have faced. drunk driving was a very popular thing to be doing 30, 40 years ago. then there was this horrific bus accident in the 80s, mothers against drunk driving got started because 27 people got killed. it became a huge turning point. watch a clip from one of those ads. are you okay to drive? yeah, i only had a couple

[ man ] i ve been out there most of my life.
he would have killed some people with that gun, but not 26. and vp joe biden said don t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. and you know, we can t prevent every killing in this country. but that doesn t mean we don t have an obligation to try. you know, enact these common sense solutions that we know will be successful in decreasing gun violence in this country. i mean, universal background checks, talking about the nra as an organization, we have to be clear, there is a distinction between who the nra leadership represents and their member and what they think. so talking about measures like universal background checks, 70% of nra members support that, and it is even higher among nongun owners. so this is an issue that they have come to a consensus on. and none of the pressures that
