(Photo: Piyarat Chongcharoen) KANCHANABURI: Eight illegal job seekers from Myanmar were arrested in Sangkhla Buri district on Wednesday night, but 12 others were whisked way by smugglers before soldiers arrived. A  team of soldiers from the Lat Ya military task force and local leaders found eight illegal border crossers, seven men and one woman, hiding in forest near an upland agricultural centre in tambon Nong Lu around 9.30pm on Wednesday.

(Photo supplied/Piyarat Chongcharoen) KANCHANABURI: Sixteen Myanmar nationals were arrested in Sangkhla Buri district for illegal entry in the early hours of Wednesday. An ethnic Mon teenager who admitted being asked to act as lookout by a Myanmar friend was also taken into custody. They were caught by soldiers patrolling the area from Song Kalia intersection to Song Kalia village in tambon Nong Lu, after villagers reported seeing people hiding in the forest, said Col Sitthiporn Julapana, commander of the Lat Ya military task force.

(Photo: Piyarat Chongcharoen) KANCHANABURI: Police arrested a man with gold bars worth about 28 million baht that were to be smuggled acoss the border to Myanmar on Tuesday night. The 37-year-old, identified only as Chart, was detained at a checkpoint in tambon Nong Lu of Sangkhlaburi district about 6pm on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, police searched the man s Toyota pickup truck, which was registered in Kanchanaburi. They found a bag containing 18 gold bars, each weighing one kilogramme. 

Border sneak-ins get left stranded

7 KANCHANABURI: Thirty-three Myanmar migrants, including nine Rohingya hoping to get to Malaysia, were rounded up overnight after they crossed the border illegally in Sangkhla Buri district. A joint military-police-civilian patrol spotted the group hiding in a forested area near the Hin Sam Kon natural crossing in tambon Nong Lu around 11.45pm on Friday. A three-year-old girl and an 11-month old baby girl were among the 16 males and 17 females, who looked exhausted when officers found them. All were taken to the Sangkhla Buri police station, where they received food and drinking water as they had not eaten anything for several days.
