service. jennifer, i know you re talking to more people down there. what can you add in addition to what we re listening to here? reporter: what we just heard was the backpack was found on the person, he was caught about 1:30 in the morning inside arlington national cemetary, inside that backpack, we are told by our law enforcement sources, they found some material, about 5 pounds of material, that was labeled ammonium nitrate, now what we ve heard from the press conference and our sources, they tested that material, it came back negative, it is an inert substance, according to the fbi spokesman we heard, from there was no explosive device in this backpack, but also in the backpack, according to our sources, this was not confirmed during the press conference there was a notebook, we re told, a notebook that had words written in it such as al-qaeda, taliban, coalition what was it, coalition defeated coalition forces,
significant explosives or related items found in that vehicle. did the man claim to have ammonium nitrate and did the man also claim to have it in another area and that s why a larger area is shut down. i don t have any specific details on what exactly he said. i have a preliminary result, which indicates he we believe he did act alone. the items in the backpack are tpeg burt being further tested. i don t have the confirming results of what that is. i can tell you there was not a device and that the products found are determined to have been inert. can you describe the device, the material? is it powder, is it plastic? i mean, any way you can give us some idea of what it is? i don t have a better description. it was in bags, as i m told. we are, as we stepped away from here, the bomb sniffers
reporter: all of this is coming on the heels of reporting that we broke last night. fox news was the first to report that on saturday, when the head of the somali al-qaeda branch, harum fazil, the 1998 mastermind of the bombings in africa, when he was killed at a checkpoint in somalia, authorities found on him papers, hard drives and material and we reported that in that material, they found operational or aspirational plans to conduct an attack against the ritz carlton hotel in london and that authorities yesterday were briefing hotel owners in new york city and were planning to do the same here in washington today because they were concerned that in the wake of the essentially the killing of this al-qaeda leader in somalia, that some of these plots may, in fact
talking with to that vehicle, but as a result of the interviews, once he became a bit more cooperative, i guess, was a bit more forthcoming with information, we re able to identify there may be a vehicle involved and our partners with the arlington county police department did locate that vig and that s why we did pursue that vehicle further. what [inaudible] hold on one second. investigation continues. we have been able to locate a vehicle nearby, which i would describe as a red 2011 nissan. though the vehicle has been connected to t. there is no suspicious activity that has been related to this vehicle the we are in possession of a backpack, which we have searched. contained in the backpack were suspicious items and products. we are further looking at those. i don t have any more detail in regard to those items and wi expect that we d be able to have additional later information later on as a result of that. he has been taken into custody and is in that status as we speak. on the person that had that backpack, it contained a nonexplosive, unknown material which will require further investigation, which is jog gone as we speak. i can tell you that this was not a device, and that the product in the backpagoo
