This week’s highly publicized GameStop hearings on Capitol Hill have put payment for order flow under the microscope, yet again.
The backstory, in a nutshell: GameStop stock surged eightfold in a week in late January, only to drop almost 90% in the subsequent two weeks. The extreme gyrations were driven largely by a retail buying (and selling) frenzy, with orders pushed through Robinhood and other platforms that cater to retail investor.

Earlier this month, TP ICAP shareholders approved the acquisition of Liquidnet, leaving regulatory approval as the final hurdle before the deal is done.
For Liquidnet, the buyout will mark the end of a 21-year run as an independent trading-platform operator, which has exceeded most anyone’s expectations, save perhaps for company founder Seth Merrin.
Liquidnet was profiled in Traders Magazine in October 2000, months before its April 2001 launch when the company was still a concept.

Traders are moving to the suburbs just like they did in 2000.
But there’s a big difference. In 2021, the migration of traders (and professionals in many other industries, for that matter) is driven by the experience of the ongoing pandemic, which suggests that (1) maybe living on top of each other (and breathing and coughing on each other) isn’t such a good idea, and (2) working remotely is much more accepted and even encouraged, so if you don’t have to make a long daily commute, why not get some space and a yard with trees.

Easily the biggest market story of this week was the mammoth short squeezes in discount-rack stocks such as GameStop (GME), AMC Entertainment (AMC), and BlackBerry (BB).
Take GameStop, a mall-based retailer that had been left for dead by Wall Street. GME was in the 50s in 2008 and in the 30s and 40s as recently as 2015, back when the stock was valued as a multiple of future earnings estimates. GME then fell on hard times, and shares dipped below $3 in March 2020 as the vultures circled.
