Bali is known as a haven for digital entrepreneurs. Pre-pandemic, Nomad List reported that there were 5,000 digital nomads working from the beach area of Canggu at any one time. Remote workers flocked to Bali to enjoy the perks of modern coworking and coliving spaces, complete with optimum Wi-Fi, plenty of networking and upskilling opportunities, and an affordable yet luxurious lifestyle. But the recent international travel ban and deportation of two travel influencers, Kristen Gray and Sergei Kosenko, indicates that digital nomads may have overstayed their welcome. This 21st-century breed of remote workers are thought-of as living free in their country of choice. But that freedom seems uncomfortably colonial when it’s at the expense of local communities.
