The Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) has devised a prototype to overcome faulty or vandalised fire hydrants when responding to fires. The still unnamed device was revealed to the local media during a FRD socialisation session at the Berakas Fire Station on Saturday.
The box-shaped prototype can be installed over fire hydrants that have been vandalised or are missing components, allowing access to water in the event of a fire. The device has yet to be deployed in a real situation.
Assistant Director of Technical at the FRD Nohi Irwan Surkarki bin Haji Pawi explained, “This is a prototype we came up with to work around the issue of fire hydrants that have been vandalised or have had their components stolen. We have prototype 1 and the improved prototype 2, which reduces installation time. If the device proves to be a success, we will have them available in every fire truck.”
