Utterly baffling, without merit: University of Mississippi fires anti-racist professor – Liberation News

1,139 4 minutes read On Dec. 10, Dr. Noell Wilson abruptly recommended to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Lee M. Cohen, that history professor Dr. Garrett Felber, “receive a one-year notice of nonrenewal pursuant to the University of Mississippi’s Termination of Untenured Faculty policy.” Wilson, Chair of the History Department at UM, did not discuss the termination with any other faculty members.  The termination shocked the department’s faculty, graduate students some of whom worked very closely with Felber and the university.  The unprecedented action is the most recent example of the university’s suppression of progressive professors and challenges to UM’s authority and racist donors.

Professor Loses Job

Professor Loses Job Not this “prof” but ‘A” professor….. This is a story from my state of Mississippi……to prove that the New South is much like the Old South…..at least in Mississippi….. Up until last week, Dr. Garrett Felber was on track to become a tenured history professor at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Felber studies race and incarceration in the U.S. and is a dedicated advocate for people who are imprisoned. He’s also a published author, having written “Those Who Know Don’t Say: The Nation of Islam, the Black Freedom Movement and the Carceral State” and co-written “The Portable Malcolm X Reader” with Pulitzer Prize-winning Malcolm X biographer Manning Marable.

FIRE objects after Ole Miss dismisses professor who complained about department chair

FIRE objects after Ole Miss dismisses professor who complained about department chair FIRE sent a letter to the University of Mississippi today calling for “a full and transparent account” of why the university decided not to renew the contract of assistant history professor Garrett Felber and asking the institution to reconsider its decision. Felber, a public critic of Ole Miss’ record on racial equity issues, has taught at Ole Miss for four years. This year, he’s on leave, completing a fellowship at Harvard University’s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. The administration’s notice letter cites Felber’s reluctance to have a real-time conversation with his supervisor. But, as FIRE’s Individual Rights Defense Program Director Adam Steinbaugh notes in our letter, Felber was being called to have that conversation to discuss his exercise of his First Amendment rights:

Thousands of scholars rally behind fired UM professor

3 min read After the surprising announcement of the dismissal of Garrett Felber, an assistant professor in the history department, thousands of academics from around the world have signed a joint letter addressed to Chancellor Glenn Boyce and Noell Wilson, chair of the history department, demanding his reinstatement.  In the letter, the undersigned ask for a “full and transparent” account of the events that led to Felber’s firing and vow to not speak at, attend events for or associate with the University of Mississippi until Felber is reinstated. The latter promise exempts those who are full-time employees at the university. The letter also states that Felber’s dismissal “has every appearance of being both politically motivated and retaliatory.”

As New York Times media reporter Edmund Lee notes, Wintour will now have “final say over publications in more than 30 markets around the world.” The University of Mississippi has fired Garrett Felber, a tenure-track assistant professor and vocal scholar of Malcolm X, the American carceral state, and anti-racism, citing poor communication. In October, Felber took to Twitter to describe how the university rejected a grant for a program he is involved with that supports study groups and provides books to incarcerated participants. Felber told the Mississi
