Raising awareness of sexual assault at the University of Hawaii
Two state legislature bills that would have required the University of Hawaii to expand training for employees in the Title IX office, and expand access to confidential services for students failed to be passed. Anna Chua, a UH student organizer, and Nora Gallo, co-executive director of the Every Voice Coalition, joined us to discuss the fight to end sexual violence on college campuses.

Nugent teaches atmospheric sciences (weather) at UH Manoa. She says clouds come in two categories, stratiform and convective. In the Hawaiian Islands, we usually have convective, which means in buoyant circulation, or in motion. When I think about convective clouds I move my fingers in these little circles like cauliflower or like boiling water in a pot. Convective clouds have a lot of moving circulation of air. Stratiform means layered. Stratiform clouds are pretty flat and usually pretty ugly.

Professor Jonathan Okamura is the author of Ethnicity and Inequality in Hawai i, his area of specialty for more than 30 years at UH Manoa. Perpetual foreigners. That s one of the dominant, racist stereotypes of Asian Americans, he said.
COVID-19 just brought it to the surface, Okamura said, but shunning and violence are overt expressions of subtler dynamics that happen every day.

Tech developer Jeff Kim lived on the East Coast, in L.A. and in Chicago. As a teen, he recalls a friend with whom he thought he shared mutual understanding and respect. I saw him just passing by on the street and he said, Hey Jeff, my favorite Asian friend! Kim said. And I told him immediately, I said, Why can t I just be your favorite friend period. You know he just kind of laughed it off and it just always stuck with me.
