Happy new year! I crossed midnight and rang in 2024 being forced to watch The Holiday (my one line review: Cameron Diaz cannot convincingly play a human being, and poor Kate Winslet) and reading Paul Auster’s new book, Baumgartner when the film became too much to watch (one line review: Paul Auster is great at writing people missing people, but not so good at them actually liking and connecting with each other).
At Christmas, many of us think about ways to help those in need. There is no end of options: we are bombarded with advertisements and leaflets encouraging us to donate to good causes. Amid all the tear-jerking campaigns, it’s hard to decide which to give to. One temptation is to give a little money to everything.
The first thing in solving the crisis is admitting it. If anything, I’m glad to see that education policymakers are much less defensive now about the learning crisis – the renewed honesty offers a bit of fresh air.
