Hours after Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday warned of action against people involved in the deadly clashes in Noakhali s Companiganj, men in plainclothes picked up Mizanur Rahman Badal, the rival of Obaidul s brother Quader Mirza.
Badal is the organising secretary of the AL s Companiganj unit and also the former upazila chairman while Mirza is the mayor of Basurhat municipality.
Police initially claimed they did not know anything about Badal s detention. But Alamgir Hossain, the superintendent of police in Noakhali, told The Daily Star around 7:20pm yesterday that Badal had been arrested.

Several naval ships have been pressed into service to transport more than 1,700 refugees to the Bay of Bengal island, according to the director of infrastructure development on Bhashan Char, Commodore Abdullah Al Mamun Chowdhury.
The refugees who have already arrived in Chattogram will reach the remote island on Tuesday.
Although the original plan was to move 700 refugees in the second batch, the number more than doubled because many other refugees expressed willingness to shift to the island, the Prime Minister s Office said.
