Athens Ability: Commission s Walk and Roll to highlight accessibility | Readers Forum

Many of us have stubbed a toe or tripped while walking the streets of Athens. We feel embarrassed, recover, and keep going. But for some of us, these “little bumps” in the sidewalk or at curb cuts make traveling through our streets and neighborhoods hazardous. At best, they limit someone’s ability to get to where they plan to go and, at worst, cause injury. The Accessibility Committee of the Athens City Commission on Disabilities works with the City of Athens by calling attention to accessibility issues and partners with City officials to find ways to make improvements so all members of our community can participate in everyday life activities including shopping, voting, going to the movies, and eating at our local restaurants.

Athens could have its most competitive election season in years, and it would be thanks to Damon Krane

With all eight City Council seats up for grabs, two without incumbents, this year could bring Athens one of the most competitive election seasons in recent memory. And much of it could end up attributed to the behind-the-scenes organizing of Damon Krane, a longtime area activist and self-proclaimed democratic socialist. In the aftermath of a tense and confrontational election season in 2019 Krane — an Independent who ran an unabashedly pro-tenant, anti-establishment campaign, lost by a wide margin to Democratic Mayor Steve Patterson, followed by failed attempts to reform city policing procedures — recoiled behind the curtains to draw up new ways to implement his policy priorities in Athens.
