UK justice organisation REDRESS has appealed to United Nations experts to urgently intervene on behalf of abducted Sudanese women’s rights activist Amira Osman, whose whereabouts remain unknown since she was allegedly taken by Sudanese security forces during a raid on her home last Saturday.
The Darfur Bar Association and its partners condemned the detention of Badreldin Siddig, lawyer and member of the resistance committee active in the Sheikh Abu Zeid neighbourhood adjacent to the Libya Market in Omdurman, and Abdelmajeed Arbab, Coordinator of the Libya Market Unit, and other activists.
Sudanese with disabilities organised demonstrations in Khartoum and other cities yesterday to reject the military coup and the political agreement and to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities that took place last week. More demonstrations took place in the country.
The second quarter of 2021 has highlighted many challenges still facing Sudan’s transitional government, however in spite of ongoing incidents of insecurity and violence in Darfur and other areas, as well as a lack of agreement between Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia on the filling and running of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the past three months have offered many optimistic milestones in Sudan’s transition.

The Sudanese Fiqh Academy issued a
fatwa on Sunday, barring the planned ratification of the UN Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The No to Oppression of Women Initiative calls for the dissolution of the Academy.
In end April, the Council of Ministers endorsed the ratification of CEDAW and the Maputo Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa. The Council noted reservations to some articles of CEDAW (Article 2, 16, and 29/1) without giving further details. The text is to be formally ratified in a joint meeting of the Sovereignty Council and the Council of Ministers.
