There s potential for a new-look-safeties room because three of the four players who received at least one snap at the position in the 2020 season have expiring contracts.
Jets General Manager Joe Douglas, however, said that an offseason priority is re-signing S Marcus Maye, the 2020 Curtis Martin Team MVP. Other than Maye, the only player under contract who took at least one snap on defense in the 2020 season was the rookie Ashtyn Davis.
Davis started six games after an impressive training camp. He first sat behind Maye and Bradley McDouglad, but was the next man up once McDougald went down. Davis first start was the equivalent to baptism by fire as he faced Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. GM Joe Douglas said after the season that he ll be in contact with C.J. Mosley, who opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID concerns, to see where he s at, make sure he s in a good place, his health is good, he s feeling good. Obviously, he s a special player. If Mosley is at his form from the Ravens and for pretty much one game as a Jet (the 2019 season opener vs. the Bills), this unit will be the stronger for it.

The defensive line looks to be heading onward and upward for next season. Quinnen Williams, the third pick of the 2019 draft, emerged as a DL playmaker in his second season. Folorunso Fatukasi and Henry Anderson spent a good amount of time in opponents backfields as well. And John Franklin-Myers, Nathan Shepherd and Kyle Phillips each showed flashes at different points. None of them is a free agent.
The line parted ways with vets Steve McLendon and Jordan Willis but got some return on their departures McLendon s trade to Tampa Bay brought a sixth-round selection in 2022, as did Willis trade to San Francisco. And McLendon s leadership will be missed, but helping to fill the veteran voice void was the third-year man Fatukasi, who provided appropriate words and urgency when needed in the locker room and on the sideline, as did the 11th-year player McLendon.
