Kinross District Police Chief Joe Micolo says the boy was reported missing Thursday. Initial investigation led officials to believe he was possibly picked up by unknown suspects from another state.
Kinross Police were assisted by the Sault Tribe Police Department, the FBI, and officers from Homeland Security Investigations in Michigan and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Through those partnerships police located the 13-year-old at a residence in Athens, TN. He was taken into protective custody and his family was notified.
Micolo says the connection between the boy and the suspects was established through social media apps. He’s reminding parents to talk to their children about the dangers of communicating with strangers on social media.
