On 7 March, a series of explosions occurred at an armoury of the Nkuantoma Gendarmerie and military barracks in Bata (the economic capital of Equatorial Guinea). According to state media reports on 8 March, at least 30 people have been killed and 700 wounded in the explosions. These numbers are likely to increase as rescue teams continue to search for survivors. The explosions have caused widespread damage to residential buildings. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has called for international support describing the situation as catastrophic. Medical and WASH support is urgently needed including mobile hospitals, medical and WASH equipment, and medicines. Highlights
Following the explosions, Foreign Minister Simeon Oyono Esono Angue pleaded for international support and described the situation as catastrophic.
Equatorial Guineans are observing a three-day national mourning to pay tribute to the victims of Sunday’s explosions that have claimed at least 105 lives so far and injured over 600.
On Wednesday, flags were flown at half-mast as instructed by the government in a decree late Tuesday.
“On March 10, 11, 12, the national flag will fly at half-mast at all military bases and on official buildings,” the decree said.
