The Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) investigating the case produced inspector Om Wangate before the court on Tuesday, in the remand application Tripathi's name was mentioned as a wanted accused.
A deputy commissioner of police was shown as wanted accused by the Mumbai Crime Branch probing an extortion case based on the complaint of angadiyas (traditional couriers), an official said on Tuesday.
After the offence was registered Tripathi was transferred to the post of DCP operations however Tripathi has since then went on a leave and yet to take the charge.
As per the sources, Wangate appeared before the Criminal Intelligent Unit (CIU) of the Mumbai crime branch on Thursday evening after the Bombay High Court (HC) refused to grant him anticipatory bail on Wednesday. Subsequently, the PI has been arrested and will be produced before the court on Friday, said a crime branch officer.
