Nithya Raman Presses Pause on New Homeless Rules Details

(Number 4 in a series about Councilperson Raman (CD4) A mad rush to enact a new city ordinance regulating homeless encampments in public spaces has been delayed until the end of the month by Councilmember Nithya Raman (CD4), who failed to go along with her council colleagues.
Hers was one of two votes against the measure. Her council colleague Mike Bonin (CD11) was the other. Although the proposal passed with a 13-2 vote, because it was not unanimous it must be voted on again.
The proposed ordinance will “specify the particular times and locations where it shall be unlawful for a person to sit, lie, or sleep, or to store, use, maintain, or place personal property in the public right-of-way.”

It was a facile promise for Nithya Raman (CD4) to make, in the final days of a hard campaign. Raman told voters in a last-minute mailer that she would “use city-owned parking lots to create safe parking, with services, safety, and security, that will help our unhoused neighbors, not push them out of their cars and onto our streets.”
That configuration has now morphed into affordable housing units for the homeless replacing the city parking lot at 728 S. Cochran Avenue in the Miracle Mile and another one at 1905 N. Highland Avenue, in Hollywood.
