Angola lost power, but not the ability to flush, run water

ANGOLA — When Friday’s power outage plunged most of Angola in the dark, there were still a couple things you could do: You could run your water and flush your toilet. That’s because the crews at Angola water and wastewater plants had backup electricity running to power pumps and other equipment that makes things work when you want a drink or gotta go. After a snow storm, you can see the immediate results: The streets and highways are cleaned and you can drive your car to get to work or go to the store, said Craig Williams, Angola’s wastewater plant superintendent.

Northern Indiana Utility NIPSCO To Close Half Of Its Schahfer Coal Plant Early

Credit Google Maps The northern Indiana utility NIPSCO has announced it will shut down half of it’s R.M. Schahfer coal plant in Wheatfield by the end of this year. That’s about two years earlier than when the whole plant is expected to shut down in 2023. Nick Meyer is the vice president of state communications for NiSource NIPSCO’s parent company. He said the reason behind closing half of Schahfer early is the same reason the utility decided to shutter all of its coal plants and move to mostly renewable sources by 2028. “We just continue to see, from an economic standpoint, a significant cost to maintain and continue to operate these units. And the fact that there is cheaper, less expensive energy that we can purchase on the market, Meyer said.

NIPSCO to retire two coal-fired units in 2021

MERRILLVILLE — Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO), a subsidiary of NiSource Inc. (NYSE: NI), announced recently plans to retire two coal-fired units representing half of its R.M. Schahfer Generating Station capacity in Wheatfield, by the end of 2021. The retirements are part of NIPSCO’s broader, long-term electric generation strategy and customer-centric plan referred to as “Your Energy, Your Future.” The strategy outlines the company’s plans to become 100% coal-free by 2028, while transitioning to reliable, lower-cost and more sustainable energy options. NIPSCO projects the transition will result in an estimated $4 billion in cost savings over the long term. The Schahfer Generating Station coal-fired units 14 and 15, designated for retirement this year, are among the oldest in NIPSCO’s fleet, having been in service since 1976 and 1979 respectively.
