We West Australians already knew Ningaloo was beyond special but it certainly felt good having our reef on the list of the world’s most outstanding heritage places, from the Acropolis and Machu Picchu to the Serengeti.
So it’s a real cause for celebration, but also a story with more twists and turns than you’d expect. It’s almost impossible to believe now, but Ningaloo’s World Heritage crown wasn’t a sure thing.
