Before Trey Lance has even started rookie minicamp in the NFL, fans are already calling for him to be the starting quarterback. I am one of those fans. However, the people with more restraint are pointing to a recent situation involving a former 49ers quarterback of the future as evidence that waiting is the best option. That situation, of course, is Patrick Mahomes sitting behind Alex Smith in Kansas City before chucking 50 touchdown passes in year two. But how similar are the two situations, really? Niner Nate and Leo Luna dove into that idea and more in today’s Niner Nate-tion Podcast.
News and notes on the San Francisco 49ers
Happy Sunday one and all.
While we have looked at the news on the Arizona Cardinals, we have plenty of news on the NFC West that helps us know what is going on around the division.
Let’s finish the look around the NFC West with my friends from Niners Nation on the San Francisco 49ers.
Was the 49ers’ offensive line as bad as some fans thought?

As the dust settles on the 2020 NFL season, 49ers fans are left to wonder if Tom Brady could have done the same thing for them as he did for the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While there’s no way to know for sure, a common refrain among the doubters is that the 43-year-old Brady would not have been able to survive behind an inconsistent 49ers offensive line. Niner Nate and Leo Luna examined that narrative with special guest Brad Graham in today’s Niners Nate-tion Podcast.
The 49ers are not getting Matthew Stafford to play quarterback for them next year. For many San Francisco fans, seeing the news of his trade to the Rams felt like that birthday you got socks instead of the thing you really wanted (thanks, Aunt Hilda). So, with Stafford officially off the table, where do the 49ers go from here?
Niner Nate, Levin Black and I decided to sit down for a roundtable podcast to chase away our sorrows and begin to piece together the options San Francisco could pursue the rest of this offseason. Is it Deshaun Watson or bust for this front office? Does Matt Ryan enter the picture?
