I take this opportunity to serve as a guest speaker for the end of Ramadan, a privilege. Let me express first my gratitude to His Lordship, the Mayor of Monrovia, brother Jefferson T. Koijee and the staff members of the Monrovia City Corporation for organizing this event and for inviting me to deliver the keynote.
This event comes at a critical point in our democracy. Globally, political scientists are concerned that the world is on a trend of ‘democratic backsliding’. They are simply concerned that gains made towards the advancement of democracy over the last three decades are quickly being undermined and eroded by autocratic regimes and extremists on both the left and right of the ideological divide.
