PORTERDALE, Ga. Real estate company owner Kay Piper is returning to the Porterdale City Council after more than 12 years.
Piper, who served on the council from 2005 to 2008, was the only candidate to qualify for a special election scheduled for today, March 16, to fill the Post 1 seat left open by the resignation of Niki Wescott.
She was set to be sworn in at the council’s Thursday work session and will fill the remaining two years of Wescott s term.

COVINGTON, Ga. One mayoral seat will be up for grabs in Newton County among several council posts this November.
The cities of Covington, Mansfield, Oxford and Porterdale, and the town of Newborn, each recently set their respective municipal qualifying requirements and election dates for the 2021 cycle.
Covington
In Covington, East Ward Post 1, currently held by Susie Keck will be on the ballot, as well as West Ward posts 2 and 3, held by Hawnethia Williams and Anthony Henderson, respectively.

PORTERDALE, Ga. Porterdale City Council voted Monday, Jan. 11, to fill one of its open seats and scheduled a special election to fill another in the wake of two of its five council members’ resignations.
The remaining council members voted to accept the immediate resignations of Post 3 Councilman Tim Savage and Post 1 Councilwoman Niki Wescott.
They then voted to appoint city zoning commission chairman Michael Patterson to serve the remainder of Savage s term this year.
