These postponements naturally affected nations’ preparations for qualifying tournaments and Team Nigeria was not an exception.
In a bid to get Team Nigeria’s qualifying series back on track, the federal government made sure the ‘Nigerian Olympics’, the 20th National Sports Festival was held in Edo State after it also suffered several postponements.
With the conclusion of the festival which equally served as qualification series for some athletes like Grace Nwokocha who won the women’s sprint double of 100m and 200m events to ensure her qualification for the Olympics, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports has now shifted focus to the Tokyo Olympics.

Rusty athletes in cloud nine as Edo 2020 begins The Punch

Local athletes, who haven’t competed for a very long time following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, are happy to return to competitive action after the long-awaited Edo 2020 National Sports Festival commenced on Friday with the arrival of sportsmen and women in Benin City on Friday.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will declare the event open on Tuesday.
Events at the 20th edition of the sports festival will start on April 6, with athletes across the federation already arriving in Benin City for Nigeria’s glamorous sporting event.
The festival, which was initially scheduled to hold from March 22 to April 1 2020, suffered its first postponement with just two days to the event and the festival, popularly known as the Nigerian Olympics, owing to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic could not hold at the appointed time.
