Aldo Pavan/Getty Images(NIAMEY, Niger) The State Department has ordered the departure of some U.S. citizens from Niger Wednesday as the violence from the attempted military coup escalates.
"Given ongoing developments in Niger and out of an abundance of caution, the Department of State is ordering the temporary departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and eligible family members from the U.S. Embassy in Niamey," the State Department said in a statement.
The embassy will remain open for "limited, emergency services to U.S. citizens," the state department said.
The announcement comes as high-ranking officials at the U.S. Department of State are trying to restore democratic order in Niger, a key U.S. ally on counterterrorism.
There may be a "narrow opportunity" to reverse an attempted coup in the West African nation, according to one senior U.S. official.
